Mystery of Maplewood's Midnight Mascot

In the small town of Maplewood, nestled amongst the sprawling forests and undulating hills, a legend had been whispered for generations. It was the legend of the Midnight Mascot, a figure that had been the topic of many a fireside chat, and the protagonist in countless bedtime stories.
Maplewood was known for its esteemed Maplewood High, and just like any other school, it had a mascot. By day, the statue of 'Mighty Maple', a robust tree with broad arms and a smiling face, stood proudly in the school's courtyard. But as per the legend, every night at midnight, Mighty Maple would come to life.
Over the years, countless tales were spun around the enigma. Some said they saw him wandering the town, watching over the children and ensuring they were safely tucked in. Others claimed they'd heard rustling and soft humming from the statue itself, indicating the mascot's waking moments.
Sarah, an 8th grader with a keen sense of adventure, decided to uncover the truth. She gathered her friends, Jack and Mia, and together they set out on a quest. Armed with flashlights and a few snacks, they camped out in the school's courtyard one fateful night.
As the clock's hands slowly crept towards midnight, an uncanny silence enveloped Maplewood High. With bated breath, the trio watched as something miraculous unfolded. Mighty Maple started to move. Slowly at first, then with more agility, he stepped down from his pedestal and began dancing in the moonlight. The dance was gentle and rhythmic, a silent celebration of the town and its people.
Mighty Maple then wandered towards the school's garden. He tenderly touched each plant, and as he did, they seemed to glow with a soft luminescence. It was as if he was blessing them with growth and prosperity. After what seemed like hours but was only minutes, the mascot returned to his pedestal, resuming his stony facade just as the first light of dawn appeared.
The children, awestruck and moved, decided to keep their experience a secret, fearing that an influx of curious outsiders might disturb the magic. But they made a pact to return every year, on the same night, to witness the dance of the Midnight Mascot.
Years turned to decades, and the legend continued. Now, every year, a group of three children, chosen by the preceding trio, would witness the magic, ensuring that the secret of Maplewood's Midnight Mascot remained both hidden and alive.
The town may have been small, but its legend was grand. It was a testament to the magic that lies hidden in everyday things, waiting for the right moment to reveal itself.
